Top 5 tips to writing the perfect wedding speech

As the big day approaches for you or your loved ones, it is likely that some of you will be called upon to give a toast or speech to the gathering guests. Now for some, this task may seem daunting, so we’re here to help with some tips and tricks that will support you in creating a wedding speech that will blow your audience away!

#1 Keep it Short and Sweet

Have you ever been to a wedding where someone gets up to the microphone and they go on and on, and on and on until you can’t remember a time before they were talking? Don’t be that person! Keep your speeches short yet meaningful.  Aim for between 5-8 minutes, it’s the perfect length that will ensure you are not sending your audience to sleep, at the same time giving you plenty of time to say all you need to say about the lovely newlyweds.

#2 Stick to You

The bride and groom know who you are and it’s likely that most of the guests will as well, so when writing a speech or toast, be yourself, don’t stretch formality to the point where you become a robot speaking in a lifeless tone. The best wedding speeches come from the heart, so when writing the speech, bring in your personality, write as you would say it, remember you’re amongst family and friends, not in the boardroom presenting a proposal!

#3 Keep the Crowd Awake

The members of the  crowd, likely your friends and family stand before you after six cookie cut speeches falling asleep after the same things are said over and over. Be the diamond in the rubble and be the speech that stands out! Add in humor and witty stories about the bride and groom ensure that the entire time you hold that microphone the audience is smiling or feeling some kind of emotion, needless to say we’ve seen countless speeches , the ones that standout are the ones that make their audience laugh  and cry all at the same time!

#4 Keep it Ordered

One of the most important things to remember when crafting and presenting  a great wedding speech is order. When you are writing the speech, read it back to yourself, when it’s finished road test it on friends or family that aren’t attending the wedding. Ask them to listen out and make sure it’s coherent.  Remember to  stick with one key theme and build your speech on that. Skipping around multiple topics and jumping into more than one theme is a sure fire way to lose your audience.

#5 Practice Makes Perfect

This last one relates less to the creation of your speech, more to delivery! It’s practice, because as the old saying goes practice makes perfect! In addition to the perfectly crafted speech, practicing it will allow you to build your confidence and deliver your speech to perfection.

So here we are at end of our top five tips for the perfect wedding speech, so if you haven’t already,  put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and go crazy.  Hopefully we’ll get to hear it at the Manor on High! Good Luck!
